The man came out of the fitting room wearing pants that were
way too big in the waist and long in the leg. The pants looked like
the bottom part of a clown outfit and were not very flattering to the
young man, to say the least. To top it off, Rose was standing there
with Maude. Neither the man nor Rose paid any attention to each
other before this moment. When the man saw Rose standing in her
nice dress with her hair tied up in ribbons, looking quite attractive,
his face turned beet red, which Rose noticed.
Maude wasted no time measuring the man’s waist, chest, and
arm length, shouting out the numbers for Rose to write down. She
asked him to put the jacket back on while she marked on the back
how much to take in, all the while giving directions to Rose and
explaining what she was doing. She told the man to remove the
jacket, which he did, and handed it to Rose. Now it was time to
measure the inseam.
Maude ensured the waist was positioned correctly, then asked
the man, “How much of a cuff do you want?”
“I don’t know. Whatever is usual, I guess,” he said.
Maude kneeled to measure the inseam and asked, “Do you
dress left or right?”
“What do you mean? I’m right-handed, if that’s what you’re
asking.”
Maude tried to clarify, “When you put on your trousers, do you
adjust your parts to the left side or the right side? We need to know
so we can leave a little more room on that side.”
When the man realized what he was being asked, he surpassed
his previous level of redness when he blushed this time. Rose being
present only added to his embarrassment.
Rose stifled her laugh and, also somewhat embarrassed, raised
the fitting sheet up to hide her face but not high enough that she
couldn’t look over the top to see what the man would do next.
He rolled his eyes to the ceiling and said, “Right, I guess. I never
checked. I don’t think a lot when I put my pants on. I’ve been doing
it for quite a while now.”
That did nothing to calm the situation and only wanted to
make Rose laugh more. In the meantime, Maude was all business
and failed to grasp the humor.
“You may go back to the fitting room and change now,” Maude
said. “Rose and I will meet you up front.”
The man turned and walked back to the fitting room at a quick
pace.
